More than a decade ago now, Jordan Evans decided to get a shovel and start digging. Because his hometown of Breman, Kentucky, was terrorized by the occasional tornado, Evans figured that it would be a smart move to build an underground storm shelter. Although he never thought that a tornado would actually come onto his property, Evans figured that it was a wise investment that could help keep his family safe in the event that a tornado did come to town.
For ten years, the investment proved worthless. Then, while Evans was out of town, a super-powerful tornado hit Breman and absolutely devastated the community. Evans’s son, Gage, was home at the time, and thankfully, he had the wherewithal to get into the storm shelter to weather the high winds that were destroying everything within reach.
Thankfully, Evans had shelled out a lot of money to create the underground bunker that would help keep his family safe if a tornado ever hit town. Because the home did not have a cellar or a basement, it was important to create the storm shelter. Evans had worked with people to build the underground bunker that was ten feet deep under the earth and twelve feet wide. The area was more than enough space for the entire family and was secure from the devastating winds of a tornado.
Gage’s stepfather Justin Pointer knew about the storm shelter and led the entire family into the bunker. If it wasn’t for Gage and Justin, the eight members of the family and their two dogs might have become a victim statistic of the Kentucky tornado. They waited underground until the tornado had passed, and then they emerged to see the damage, which would have killed them if they hadn’t had the underground shelter that Evans had built all those years before.
“It started shaking the lid real bad. We had to hold it down,” Justin recalled.
The shelter was built more than a decade before and had never needed to be used until the Kentucky tornado on December 18, 2021.
“He said he’d pay a hundred times more for it right now,” Justin said.
The family’s story is a reminder that it is important to be prepared for anything and to have a plan B, C, D, etc., in case of emergency. Evans’s decision to build the storm shelter ended up saving his family during the devastating tornado.
As the saying goes, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Make sure that you have a storm shelter or some other form of protection in case of emergencies. If something does happen, don’t be caught without a plan! Evans’s story is a perfect example of why it’s important to be prepared for anything. Thankfully, his family was safe thanks to the storm shelter that he had built all those years ago. It’s a good idea to have a storm shelter or some other form of emergency protection, just in case something does happen!
